One day and one night in Istanbul
Dragging my heavy luggage walking alone in the streets in Istanbul, the temperature was still very low on spring equinox. It was already six o’clock in the morning and the day was just starting; heavy and dense fog made me hug myself and quicken my pace.
The vendors near the harbor gathered around smoking, chatting, and occasionally they cried to the rushing passengers for sale with zealous yet cold attitude. Under their bright smile might hide certain plot that I didn’t understand, and didn’t want to understand just like the first impression that the city gave me. Even in their purposely high pitch of crying when seeing my Asian face, I still could not tell whether it was out of teasing or friendliness in the cries of “こんにちは” and “안녕하세요”.
The atmosphere ashore made me uneasy; I had but choose to jump on the ferry hoping Bosporus Strait might offer me some guidance as she did two thousand years ago dividing Greek "Byzantine", Roman "new Rome," and Constantinople utterly into Europe and Asia, which were completely two different world, and therefore firmly made this the only city in the world closely connected and inseparable with such careful and ingenious wisdom.
However, the Bosphorus Strait would only respond with low and gruff calls of sea gulls and cold sea water constantly splashing on the deck. Even the distant Bosporus Bridge across the Strait remained silent but only the endless traffic on the bridge reminded me the travel was still going on.
